Dental treatment under anaesthetic

Anaesthesia is a general anaesthesia involving the administration of a pharmacological agent under the influence of which there is a controlled, reversible, total loss of consciousness, deep sleep and absence of pain sensation. In our practice, intravenous anaesthesia is used, involving the administration of an analgesic and anaesthetic drug to the patient via intravenous route, which after a while induces sleep.

Modern tooth treatment without pain

Dental treatment under anaesthesia is a solution for patients who have a strong fear of visiting the dentist, require lengthy or complicated procedures, and for children who have difficulty cooperating. Thanks to the presence of an anaesthetist and modern methods of general anaesthesia, the whole process is safe, comfortable and allows multiple procedures to be performed in one visit.

Course of anaesthetic treatment

Anaesthesia is used for people with dentophobia, which is a panicky, uncontrollable fear associated with dental treatment.

An important indication for the use of general anaesthesia is also a disease or disability preventing the correct performance of the procedure, as well as a lack of cooperation from the patient during the visit. We would like to emphasise that our doctors do not undertake treatment "by force". Forced treatment leads to psychological trauma, increased fear of the dentist and increased resistance to future treatment.

General anaesthesia can also be used if a lengthy procedure needs to be carried out in one visit (e.g. surgery, implant surgery) to ensure the greatest possible level of safety and comfort for the patient.

The dentist qualifies the patient for anaesthetic treatment after a prior consultation visit. The dentist interviews the patient and informs him or her of the anaesthetic dental treatment. Following this consultation, the patient is given a specially prepared consent for anaesthetic treatment so that he or she has a thorough understanding of the procedures involved. A detailed completion of the anaesthetic questionnaire is also necessary in order to obtain important information about the patient's state of health and to exclude possible contraindications.

At the consultation appointment, the patient also receives a treatment plan with a preliminary cost estimate and pre- and post-operative recommendations.

At our centre, we specialise in treatment using anaesthesia mainly in Young Patients. Children qualified for the procedure on the basis of a questionnaire filled in by their parents and a conversation with the anaesthetist are invited to the surgery, where they have time to become accustomed to the place and prepare for the treatment. If necessary, premedication, i.e. sedation with pharmacological agents (e.g. in the form of syrup, tablets), is used before general anaesthesia is administered. The anaesthetist then administers anaesthesia via the intravenous route, which puts the child into a state of deep sleep. Throughout the procedure, the patient is under the control of the anaesthetist, who monitors vital functions through high-quality equipment .

Thanks to anaesthesia, it is possible to treat all teeth during a single visit, which is particularly important in children, people with disabilities and patients with dentophobia. This also translates into quality and comfort for the doctor.

After the procedure, the patient rests in a specially prepared room, remaining under the care of the anaesthetist until the effects of the drugs have fully subsided. Once the child has fully recovered, he or she can return home with his or her parents, all the while remaining in contact with our specialists - both the dentist and the anaesthetist.

Anaesthesia is a general anaesthetic that involves pharmacologically inducing the patient into a state of sleep. The dentist qualifies for anaesthesia by interviewing the patient and informing him or her of the anaesthetic dental treatment. Indications for anaesthetic treatment may include dentophobia or disabilities that prevent the dentist from performing the procedure under local anaesthetic. Anaesthesia is most commonly used for surgical, endodontic and implant treatment.

Recommendations for patients under anaesthesia

  • Do not eat any solid food for 4h before the procedure.
  • Do not drink for 4h before treatment.
  • Take or discontinue medications taken on a regular basis as advised by your doctor.
  • On the day of the procedure, the patient must be healthy, without symptoms of acute infection (flu, cold, herpes, etc.).
  • After the procedure, adult supervision and a suitable means of transport after the procedure should be provided.
  • After the procedure, minor discomforts may occur (loss of appetite, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, a feeling of general fatigue and minor incoordination), so it is important that the patient is under constant supervision of a third person for the rest of the day.
  • Any additional recommendations are made on a case-by-case basis depending on the type of treatment being carried out.
Should you experience any worrying symptoms after the procedure, our specialists are available to help you on a 24-hour telephone number.

Safety of the treatment

Complications associated with general anaesthesia in healthy patients are extremely rare. However, there are no medical procedures that are completely free of any risks and guarantee 100% safety. Procedures under anaesthesia that are performed as planned, in pre-prepared and appropriately qualified patients have a minimal chance of complications.

The risks from untreated caries and extensive inflammation are incomparably greater than anaesthesia alone. The care of our experienced and qualified specialists largely eliminates the possibility of complications. The anaesthetic team ensures that anaesthesia is administered correctly and that the patient is awakened safely at the end of the procedure.

We highly recommend it! Our son associates a visit to Promedica Będzin with great fun! Before we came to Promedica, our son was very afraid of the dentist (he got discouraged in another place and was very scared) and didn't even want to open his mouth. Thanks to the Promedica team, my son is no longer afraid at all. Without any fear, he happily sits on the hotel table and has his teeth treated, and his smile accompanies him throughout the whole visit! We would recommend to anyone who is still wondering at 100%.
